IC Clone is one of the most widely used MCU crack scenarios. It is used by a large variety of IC attackers from individuals, who want cheaper electronic gadgets, to large companies interested in increasing their sales without large investment in design. For example, dishonest competitors may try to clone existing product’s chip to reduce development costs. Of course they will have to spend some effort to disguise the fact of piracy, but compared to honest development cost this is negligible. Normally chip cloning requires microcontroller reverse engineering of the device to some extent.
